Location
Domaso lies in the western Alto Lario, at the mouth of the Livo river.
History
A village of probable Roman origin, often at odds with Como and Gravedona, it took part in the Ten Years’ War between Milan and Como in the 12th century. It sought for a long time to break away from the pieve of Gravedona, finally succeeding only in 1946.
What to see
- Villa Camilla: an 18th-century residence of the Sebregondi family and later of the English Hill family, today home to the town hall.
- Church of San Bartolomeo: built before the 13th century in Romanesque style, later transformed into Baroque.
What to do
Domaso is one of the leading windsurfing and sailing spots in Italy and Europe, thanks to the “breva”, a thermal wind that blows steadily from the south from March to October (6 days out of 7, at 7-18 knots), amplified by the funnel effect of the surrounding mountains. For a view over the village, climb up to Vercana or Caino, behind the town. The old cellars still produce the rare Domasino wine, appreciated since Roman times.
Getting there
Domaso is served by the C10 Como-Menaggio-Colico bus line and by a Lake Como Navigation ferry stop; by car, take the SS340 Regina.
