Location
Eupilio lies on the slopes of Monte Cornizzolo, between Lake Pusiano and Lake Segrino.
History
Formed in 1929 from the union of Carella, Mariaga, Penzano, Corneno and Galliano. The name comes from “Eupili”, the ancient name of Lake Pusiano cited by Pliny the Elder in his “Naturalis Historia”.
What to see
- Lake Pusiano (Eupili): a basin of glacial origin fed by the Lambro river, with the distinctive Isola dei Cipressi, also home to kangaroos.
- Lake Segrino: a narrow, elongated lake of glacial origin, among the cleanest in Europe; swimming is possible at the Lido del Segrino, with an easy walking loop of about 5 km around the lake.
- Hamlet churches: San Giorgio (Corneno), San Vincenzo (Galliano), San Cristoforo (Mariaga), San Martino (Carella), San Lorenzo (Penzano).
- Casa dei Padri Barnabiti: an extensive themed panoramic park (paths of light, of the cross, of the rosary), open to visits by arrangement.
What to do
The ascent of Monte Cornizzolo, for example from Carella. Cycling and walking paths around both lakes; boat trips, canoeing and fishing (with a permit) are also possible.
Getting there
Eupilio has no station of its own; the nearest is Erba, from where a direct bus reaches Eupilio-Piazza Rigamonti in about 9 minutes, while the C190 line also passes through Longone al Segrino. By car, it is reached via the SP41.
