Location
Laglio lies on the western shore of the lake, about fifteen kilometres from Como.
History
Already an autonomous administrative entity in 12th-century documents, it belonged to the pieve of Nesso, on the opposite shore; it was a fief of the Crivelli family until the 17th century, then of the Gallio family. United with Brienno from 1927 to 1948, it later became independent again. It has been known internationally since 2001, when the actor George Clooney bought Villa Oleandra.
What to see
- Villa Oleandra, an 18th-century residence and George Clooney’s home since 2001: 25 rooms with marble and frescoes, gardens, a tennis court and a swimming pool. It cannot be visited, but can be admired from the lake by boat; it was also a filming location for “Ocean’s Twelve”.
- The church of San Giorgio, on the village square, with 18th-century stuccoes.
- The pyramid of Joseph Frank, an unusual 19th-century funerary monument in the village cemetery.
- The Buco dell’Orso, in the hamlet of Torriggia: a cave where bones of bears and other animals now vanished from the area were found.
- Soldino, one of the historic hamlets, also reachable via the Via Verde, with narrow lanes and traces of old trades.
What to do
You can climb Monte di Torriggia or, moving towards Carate Urio, Monte Colmegnone, which lies within Laglio’s territory.
Getting there
Bus lines C10 and C20 connect Como to Laglio in about 26 minutes; by car, take the SS340 Regina. As there is no direct Navigazione stop, the nearest are at Brienno and Carate Urio.
