Location
San Siro lies on the western shore of the lake, just after Menaggio.
History
The Della Torre family, from whom Pope Clement XIII was born, originated in the hamlet of Santa Maria Rezzonico. The municipality of San Siro was established in 2003 by the merger of Sant’Abbondio and Santa Maria Rezzonico.
What to see
- The Castello di Rezzonico, 14th century, built by the counts Della Torre di Rezzonico: a medieval tower with Ghibelline battlements, on a trapezoidal plan of about 2,000 sqm with three towers; privately owned and not open inside, but clearly visible from the outside, with a bathing beach at its foot.
- Villa La Gaeta, in eclectic style in the hamlet of Acquaseria, a former film set and not open to visitors.
- The remains of a late-Roman fortress at Santa Maria.
- The Church of Santa Maria, 15th century, with paintings by Michelangelo Carminati and Sigismondo de Magistris.
What to do
Scenic excursions unfold on the southern slopes of Monte Bregagno; from the hamlet of Breglia di Plesio, trails lead to Monte Grona and the Rifugio Menaggio.
Getting there
Bus line C10 Como-Menaggio-Colico serves San Siro; by car you arrive via the SS340 Regina, just after Menaggio.
