Location
Stazzona lies at 540 metres above sea level at the foot of Monte Cortafon, in a sunny position in the Valle Albano above Dongo, along the road to the Passo San Jorio.
History
The earliest documentary records date back to the 13th century, though the origins are probably older: the name is thought to derive from the Latin “statio”, a stopping point along the trade route to Switzerland. For centuries the village shared the fortunes of the neighbouring mountain villages of Germasino and Garzeno, on the “Monte di Dongo”.
What to see
- The parish church of San Giuliano, whose oldest part dates back to the 15th century, with fine frescoes and 16th-century stained glass.
- Vanzonico, a hamlet known for its “crotti”, cellars carved into the rock and turned into taverns serving traditional dishes.

Getting there
Bus line C10 connects Como to Stazzona (Loro e Castanedo stop); by car, you climb the Valle Albano from the SS340 Regina at Dongo.
