Church of Santi Bartolomeo e Nicola (Nobiallo)

Centro Lago

Menaggio →

The church of Santi Bartolomeo e Nicola, called San Bartolomeo, is the parish church of Nobiallo, a hamlet of Menaggio on the old Regina road: the building is of 1724-1797 and beside it stands a Romanesque bell tower of bare stone, markedly leaning.

History

A chapel of San Bartolomeo at Nobiallo is listed in the pieve of Menaggio from the end of the 13th century. At the end of the 16th century, in the papers of Bishop Ninguarda’s pastoral visit, Nobiallo was a parish of the pieve, with the church dedicated to Saints Bartholomew and Nicholas, and as such it is attested also in 1651. In 1781 it had 139 souls and in 1788, when the appointment of the incumbent was of free collation, 159 parishioners; in its territory was the oratory of the Blessed Virgin, and in 1893 the church of the Madonna della Pace is recorded. The regional record places the complex, made up of the church, the bell tower and a small nearby oratory, at 1724-1797.

What to see

The hall is single, with side chapels, and plastered; the pitched roof is partly of stone slabs and partly of Marseilles tiles. To the south leans the bell tower, square, with a hipped roof and a marked tilt, and its masonry all exposed. For Wikipedia it is a Romanesque bell tower of the 12th-13th century, with a sundial and an ossuary at the base. On the facade fragments of fresco remain, and on the north side a medieval coat of arms older than the 15th century; inside, 17th-century canvases and, on the vault, the frescoes by Luigi Tagliaferri of 1898.
