The oratory of Madonna del Gorghiglio stands along the road connecting Peglio to Livo, in an area locally known as Pian di Gorghiglio. It is listed by the official sources for Stage 4 of the Via dei Monti Lariani as a waypoint along the route, on the first day’s stretch between Garzeno and Peglio.
History
The current building was rebuilt in 1779 in place of an earlier chapel documented as far back as 1706, and was solemnly blessed on 8 September 1780. An independent source dates the chapel’s origin to the 17th century, consistent with the 1706 record. It is a single-nave oratory preceded by a portico.
Practical information
- Like many small mountain churches scattered along the trails of the Lombard Prealps, the oratory has also always served a practical purpose for those walking in this part of the Alto Lario: shelter in case of bad weather along the route.
