Named after a large, old alder tree that shades bathers, Spiaggia Ontano is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts in Colico, and today it is also accessible to people with disabilities. It lies in the Villatico hamlet, about a ten-minute walk from the town centre: a wide grassy meadow that slopes gently down to the lake, with open views of the surrounding mountains.
Sailing, kitesurfing and outdoor sports
The Sentiero Valtellina also starts here — the very long cycling and walking route of 114 kilometres that follows the course of the Adda river all the way to Bormio: one more reason, after a swim, to explore the area by bike. Thanks to the Breva, the wind that blows steadily from March to October, this area has become a landmark for sailing and kitesurfing, with a sailing school on site, as well as an ideal spot for kite flying thanks to its wide open spaces.
Facilities and accessibility
The beach has a restaurant, a bar-gelateria, a children’s playground and a fenced camper stopover area with electrical hook-ups and hot showers, as well as canoe rental. One aspect that makes this beach particularly noteworthy is its commitment to accessibility: on the days when lifeguard assistance is provided, guaranteed by the Associazione Amici di Claudio and the Croce Rossa di Colico from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, a dedicated shaded area is made available, along with the chance to swim assisted by specialised Operatori Acquatici (water operators), with dedicated aids and life jackets — the first facility of this kind in the area.
Practical information
- The water is generally rated excellent by the Portale Acque di Balneazione (Italy’s official bathing water portal); in rare cases short temporary bans have been issued, always promptly lifted after further checks.
- Lifeguard assistance is provided by the Associazione Amici di Claudio and the Croce Rossa di Colico, from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on service days, with a dedicated shaded area and support from specialised water operators for people with disabilities.
