Location
Montemezzo is a small mountain comune at 522 metres above sea level, in the hilly hinterland of the Alto Lario above Gravedona ed Uniti.
History
The territory was part of the fief of the Tre Pievi (Dongo, Sorico and Gravedona): in 1545 it was enfeoffed to Gian Giacomo de’ Medici, known as il Medeghino, and in 1580, by notarial deed, it passed to the Gallio family.
What to see
- The Chiesetta di San Lorenzo, a small religious building.
- The Church of San Martino, built in the 15th century, with a Renaissance-influenced portal and a sandstone facade.
What to do
The area is well-suited to peaceful walks among the terraced vineyards that characterise the hills above Gravedona, with open views over the lake; it lies close to the trails linking Peglio, Livo and Dosso del Liro.
Getting there
The mid-slope provincial roads that climb from the SS340 at Gravedona connect Montemezzo to Peglio, Livo and Dosso del Liro.
