The Fonti di Gajum spring rises at 485 metres on the slope of the Ravella stream, in a hamlet of Canzo along the path towards the Sanctuary of San Miro. It is the classic resting point for hikers and the starting point of the numbered trails of the Comune di Canzo leading to Rifugio SEV Pianezzo and the Corni di Canzo.
History
The springs were discovered in the 19th century and gave rise to a small business: in the 1960s a company bottled the water, and a hotel-restaurant stood near the spring. Today part of the water feeds into the municipal water supply.
Around the springs a number of “Alp” settlements developed — Alp Grass, Alp dal Suu, Terz’Alpe, Alpètt and Alp a vòlt — small mountain hamlets once permanently inhabited. Alp Grass is home to the educational museum of the Sasso Malascarpa Nature Reserve, established in 1985.
Getting there
From the Fonti di Gajum, the numbered trails of the Comune di Canzo climb to Rifugio SEV Pianezzo (Path 1 or Path 5) or, alternatively, follow the Val Ravella geological trail (Path 2). This is the start and end point of the Ascesa ai Corni di Canzo itinerary.
