Monte Bregagno, 2,107 metres, is the highest peak of the mountains overlooking the western side of the upper Lake Como (Alto Lario), in the Prealpi Luganesi. Its ridge runs for about 4 kilometres between Val Menaggio and Val di Dongo, and the mountain can be reached from several sides: from Breglia, in the municipality of Plesio, or from the municipality of Musso.
What to see
From the summit the view spans the Grigne group, the mountains of Valtellina, Valchiavenna and the Mesolcina chain. On the saddle between Bregagno and Monte Grona, at 1,623 metres, stands the small chapel of Sant’Amate, a shelter point for hikers. In winter, Bregagno is also a ski-mountaineering destination.
Getting there
The climb starts from Monti di Breglia (municipality of Plesio), via the Sella di Sant’Amate, or from the Musso side.
Practical information
- Difficulty: hiking trails with no technical difficulty, but significant elevation gain given the altitude.
- Winter caution: the ridge and slopes are used by ski mountaineers — check snow conditions before climbing.
