Rifugio Menaggio stands at about 1,380 metres on the slopes of Monte Grona, in the municipality of Plesio. It is run by the CAI Menaggio section and is one of the stops along Stage 3 of the Via dei Monti Lariani, reached via a short detour from the main route.
History
The hut was built in 1962 by the CAI Menaggio section on the ruins of an earlier building, the “mason del Fedee” (Fedele’s stable), which gave the locality its name.
What to see and facilities
The hut has 20 beds and a panoramic terrace overlooking the lake. It is the starting point for climbing Monte Grona, reachable via three different routes, and Pizzo di Gino (2,245 m); a long-distance traverse along the Via dei Monti Lariani connects it to Rifugio Sommafiume.
Getting there
On foot from Monti di Breglia (a hamlet of Plesio, with ample parking) in about an hour with 380 metres of ascent, or from Breglia in about an hour and three quarters.
Practical information
- Opening: continuously from mid-June to mid-September; the rest of the year on weekends and public holidays, with off-season stays possible by reservation.
