On the eastern edge of Lecco, in the Caleotto district, Villa Manzoni was for almost two centuries the family home of Alessandro Manzoni: his father Don Pietro was born here, the writer himself spent his childhood and youth here, and it was from its rooms overlooking the lake and the mountains that he drew the inspiration for the famous opening lines of The Betrothed. Since the twentieth century the villa has housed the Museo Manzoniano and part of Lecco’s civic museums.
History
The villa’s roots go back to 1621, when Giacomo Maria Manzoni, the writer’s great-great-grandfather, moved from Valsassina to Lecco. Here, on 2 July 1736, Don Pietro Manzoni, Alessandro’s father, was born; here the future author of The Betrothed spent his childhood and youth, as he himself recalls in the introduction to “Fermo e Lucia”. In 1818 the family sold the property to Giuseppe Scola, a wealthy silk entrepreneur, who preserved the original appearance of the rooms. Later passed to the Municipality of Lecco, in 1940 the villa was declared a National Monument by King Vittorio Emanuele III, together with the nearby church and convent of Fra Cristoforo in Pescarenico — a double recognition that ties both places to the city’s literary memory.
What to see
The villa now houses the Museo Manzoniano, with manuscripts, autographs and memorabilia related to the life and works of Alessandro Manzoni, together with 19th-century prints and views of the Manzonian sites of the area; it also holds the municipal art gallery, a separate archive section and a specialised library. From the upper windows visitors can still enjoy the view of the lake and of Monte Resegone which, according to tradition, inspired the novel’s famous opening lines.
Getting there
Villa Manzoni is at Via Don Luigi Guanella 1, about a ten-minute walk from the Lecco railway station. It is the starting point of the Manzonian Lecco itinerary through the places of the novel.
