Lake Como by Bicycle: Where to Ride, What Is Under Construction and How to Take Your Bike
Three flat rides, the Lecco-shore road with the path works, Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano, and taking your bike on trains, boats and the funicular.
If you are looking for a Lake Como cycle path, the first thing to know is that a continuous route around the lake does not exist: no official source describes one. What there is: three flat rides you can do in a day, a road along the Lecco shore where work on a future cycle path is just starting, and the climbs cyclists come for, from the Ghisallo to the Muro di Sormano. Here is what you can do today, 6 October 2026, and how to take your bike on trains, boats and the funicular.
The data come from public bodies, transport operators and tourism portals, read on 6 October 2026. Where sources disagree we say so in one line, and where a figure is missing we write «not stated». There are no rentals, shops or tours, and no difficulty ratings of our own: we report what the people who run each route write.
Lake Como cycle path: three flat rides you can do today
These are the three routes the authorities describe as flat. None is all cycle path: each has at least one stretch on a road.
| Ride | How far | What you find |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Segrino loop | About 5 km | A full circuit of the lake. On the eastern shore the path is closed to traffic; on the western one it narrows and for a short stretch runs beside the provincial road. The surface is not stated. |
| Pian di Spagna, loop from Colico | 23 km, about 3 hours | From the Colico pier along the Adda and through the reserve, on dirt and asphalt. You use the pavement of the SS 36 bridge and cross the SS 340. |
| Pian di Spagna South, from Colico | About 2 hours, length not stated | A shorter variant from the landing stage in piazza Garibaldi. The return again uses the SS 36. |
| From Domaso to Dongo | 5 km | Lakeside, partly packed earth and partly asphalt. A steep street (via Sorriso) leads up to the Regina state road and the walking and cycling path ends at the Gere beach: to enter Dongo you are back on the road. |
Source: in-Lombardia (Segrino), North Lake Como (Pian di Spagna and Domaso-Dongo), Visit Colico (Pian di Spagna South), pages read on 6 October 2026. The cards give the elevation as «Flat» or «pianeggiante»; the Domaso-Dongo card also calls one street «steep».
For the Segrino there is the loop itinerary and the lido. At Pian di Spagna the card warns that a barrier may block access to the Adda bank: if so, you go around it on the left. We could not read the reserve’s rules on bicycles because its site was under maintenance. From Colico the Sentiero Valtellina also starts, 114 km along the Adda to Bormio, which falls outside this guide.
Brianza: Alserio, Segrino and Pusiano
In the Brianza lakes area the Parco Valle Lambro has two official routes for bikes: the loops around Lake Alserio, four in all for 20.8 km, and the Monza-Erba cycle route, which the card gives as 37 km (the text says «almost 30»). Then there is the Ciclovia dei Laghi, which the Consorzio Parco Lago Segrino describes from Ponte Tresa to Colico, 270 km. Section 6 links Merone, on Lake Pusiano, to Bellagio in 36.7 km and about three hours: mostly easy as far as Canzo, «moderate/sporty» from Canzo to Bellagio, and all downhill from Magreglio.
Lake Pusiano is the exception: a complete cycle loop does not exist. Il Giorno wrote in March 2024 that the mayor of Eupilio called it the «final dream», with the eastern shore at detailed-design stage and the western one, full of private property, still being studied. We found no updates. For the stops around the lake there is the Pusiano itinerary, which is not a continuous cycle route.
From Colico to Lecco: the provincial road and the path under construction
On the eastern shore the continuous cycle path is still a project. eccoLecco describes the route between Colico and Lecco as a road that follows the provincial road 72 all the way: 52.3 km, difficulty «Moderate», with the stretch between Lecco and Abbadia Lariana as a critical point, where it recommends public transport. in-Lombardia, the Region’s tourism site, gives 41 km and «Facile», without saying which roads it uses. Neither page says how much of it is separated from cars.
The real path is under construction. The Brezza project is split into seven sections, one per municipality, and is worth 14,657,500 euro, of which 11,284,000 from the Region. The Province of Lecco, which coordinates it, says it expects to finish «in the next two years»: that is a target, not an opening date.
| Municipality | Where it stands |
|---|---|
| Colico | «Almost finished» on 17 September |
| Dervio | Works started on 21 September, 10 months from the contract; meanwhile alternating one-way traffic with a light |
| Bellano | Works assigned, start planned for the end of September |
| Perledo | Works assigned, start planned between the end of September and early October |
| Mandello del Lario | Start planned for October, starting from Abbadia towards the village, almost as far as Olcio |
| Lierna | Tender planned by the end of the year |
| Abbadia Lariana | Design of the SP 72 overpass about to be handed over, then tender and only after that the works |
Source: LeccoToday, 17 September 2026, and Province of Lecco, 23 September 2026. These are states of progress and forecasts on those dates, not openings.
We found no news of works already started at Bellano, Perledo and Mandello. The part beyond the tunnels between Olcio and Grumo was left out of the agreement of late 2023 because it was judged too expensive. At Dervio the sources disagree on duration: LeccoToday wrote «at least six months», the Province ten from the contract, and the Province prevails.
Between Lecco and Abbadia Lariana there is also a separate work, Anas’s walkway: more than 3.2 km, over 2.2 of them on a deck along the lake, 32 million euro, foundation stone laid on 15 December 2025. In its statement Anas gives no opening date. LeccoToday writes that for Anas the inauguration was planned for May 2027, but the date does not appear in the statement.
Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano
The most famous climb is the Ghisallo from Bellagio. The organiser of Il Lombardia gives it as 8.6 km with a 6.2% average gradient, and the race guide writes that it reaches 14%. The figures change from source to source: the Region’s card gives 8.5 km and 5.5%, citing a private site. Take them as orders of magnitude, because there is no official measurement.
At the top of the Ghisallo, in Magreglio, is the Cycling Museum. From the first Saturday of March to 1 November it is open every day from 9.30 to 17.30. The ticket costs 6 euro, and 5 for those who arrived by bike; children up to 8 enter free. There are bike racks and free padlocks, to be asked for at the desk.
The Muro di Sormano climbs from Sormano to the Colma: under 2 km, with a 16% average gradient and peaks of 23% according to the Region. Every metre is marked on the asphalt. The same card writes that riding down the Muro is impossible and that to get back to the start there is the provincial road SP 44.
| Il Lombardia 2026 climb | Length | Average gradient |
|---|---|---|
| Civiglio | About 4.2 km | 9.7%, peaks of 14% |
| San Fermo della Battaglia | 2.7 km | 7.2% |
| Giovenzana, from Santa Maria Hoè | 3.6 km | 9.2%, about 750 m at 14% |

Taking your bike on trains, boats, ferries and the funicular
| Means | Can you? | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Trenord trains | Non-folding bikes only on certain services and lines, shown in the timetable search; folded folding bikes always | Free within Lombardy, supplement outside the region |
| Boats, fast service | No | Not applicable |
| Line boats | Depends on the run | We did not find the price |
| Ferries Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna | Yes | 1.20 euro if you already hold a ticket, 6.70 otherwise |
| Como-Brunate funicular | Yes | 3.60 euro, 7.30 for a single ticket with the bike |
| Argegno-Pigra cable car | Yes | 3.30 euro |
| ASF buses | Only folded folding bikes | Not stated |
Source: Trenord, Navigazione Laghi (price lists from 1 April 2026 and autumn timetable), Como-Brunate funicular (fares from 1 September 2026), ATM, ASF; pages read on 6 October 2026.
On trains it is one bike per traveller, in the dedicated areas, and in stations you wheel it by hand. The conductor may limit access if it is crowded. For a group of three or more Trenord asks you to notify at least five days ahead, and conventional bikes do not go on replacement buses. The page has no date.
On line boats it depends on the vessel and the traffic of the moment. The autumn timetable, from 5 October to 1 November according to the PDF, marks each run with a symbol: recommended, limited by traffic or no bikes. We read the legend and not the single runs, so the run you need has to be checked on the PDF. The price list says bikes cannot board the fast service; ticket prices are in the boat guide.
On the ferry the 1.20 euro applies to the vehicle only and only if you already hold an individual ticket; without one, 6.70 euro. The 10-trip carnet costs 60.80 euro.
At the Como-Brunate funicular the fares of 1 September 2026 are 3.60 euro for bikes, animals, pushchairs and other parcels and 7.30 for a ride with the bike. On Friday 9 October there is a strike: service may not be assured between 8.30 and 16.30 and after 19.30. At the Argegno-Pigra cable car bikes cost 3.30 euro (ATM price list of June 2025, undated in its text), at Piani d’Erna in Lecco 3 euro, but the cable car is closed from 5 to 31 October. Hours and conditions are in the guide to funiculars and cable cars.
Where you walk your bike or are advised against riding
In Como, according to the local press, under ordinance 350 of 25 August 2026 you walk your bike in about thirty streets and squares of the walled city and the lakefront. The ban applies in the new pedestrian areas, including the squares Duomo, Volta, San Fedele, Cavour, Perretta, Mazzini, Gobetti, Grimoldi and Verdi, and in seven streets or stretches: via Cantù, via Rovelli, via Del Pero, via Luini, via Boldoni, via Indipendenza and via Vittorio Emanuele II. It applies to electric bikes as to pedal ones; police and emergency-service bicycles are exempt.
The text of the ordinance is not on the Comune’s site: its pages on the ZTL date from 2025 and still cite ordinance 11/2017. The news comes from QuiComo, which says it examined it, from Il Post and from Il Giorno. We do not know since when the new signage has been in place, so in the centre the signs you find on the spot are what counts.
The Greenway del Lago di Como, 11.2 km between Colonno and Griante, has no ban but a discouragement: the site’s FAQ write «Non è consigliabile percorrere la Greenway in bici, ci sono tratti in salita, stradine strette e acciottolate, gradini» (cycling the Greenway is not advisable: there are uphill stretches, narrow cobbled lanes and steps). On the paths the Parco Valle Lambro calls «Vie del Parco», such as those at Alserio and the Monza-Erba, the regulation of 16 April 2015 gives priority to pedestrians, allows pedal-assist bikes and sets a limit of 20 km/h unless signs say otherwise.
Saturday 10 October: Il Lombardia in Como
On Saturday 10 October 2026 the race arrives in Como from Bergamo, after 239 km. For averages of 42, 40 and 38 km/h the race guide forecasts the passage at Bellagio between 14.57 and 15.24, at the Ghisallo between 15.16 and 15.46, then Asso, Canzo, Albese and Tavernerio, and the finish in Como between 16.40 and 17.20, after a final circuit with two passes over San Fermo della Battaglia and one over the Civiglio. These are race times, not closure times.
In Como, according to ComoZero reporting the Comune’s ordinance, parking is banned along the whole route from 10.00 and traffic, including pedestrians crossing, between 15.45 and 16.17 and until the «Fine Corsa» vehicle passes. On the lakefront the bans start at 14.00 on Friday 9 October. For roads outside Como we found no ordinances. Where it finishes is unclear: ComoZero writes piazza Cavour, the race guide Lungolario Trento.
What we do not know
There is no complete list of the cycle paths of Como and Lecco: we reported those the authorities describe and may have missed some. We lack the surface of the Segrino, a cycle loop of Pusiano, the Pian di Spagna reserve’s rules, the price of a bike on line boats and the maximum number of bikes on the funicular. We have no opening dates for the Brezza sections or the Anas walkway, and for the Como ban the text of the ordinance is missing. There is no list of landslides and road closures for the whole lake: this guide is not a bulletin.
How we read the sources
For each item we opened the operator’s or body’s original page, or the PDF, on 6 October 2026, with the update date when there was one. We do not use travel blogs, rental sites or route apps with user-generated content. The search was done with the help of artificial-intelligence tools and every item was reread on the source: that is how we corrected the price of a bike on the funicular, which the draft gave as 3.50 euro. We also corrected the itinerary, the lake page and the town page of Pusiano, which said the lake can be ridden round along the shore.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a continuous cycle path along Lake Como?
No, among the sources we read none describes one. On the eastern shore the Brezza project has seven sections at different stages and the Province aims to finish it in two years; until then the route between Colico and Lecco is the provincial road.
What is the easiest ride by bike?
The three the cards call flat: the Segrino loop (about 5 km), Pian di Spagna from Colico (23 km) and Domaso-Dongo (5 km, with one steep street).
Can I take my bike on the train and on the boat?
On the train only on enabled services, which you see in Trenord’s timetable search, and within Lombardy you do not pay. On the boat it depends on the run: not on the fast service, and for the others the timetable marks whether bikes are recommended, limited or excluded. On the ferry it costs 1.20 euro, or 6.70 without another ticket.
Can I ride in the centre of Como?
In about thirty streets and squares of the walled city, no: you walk your bike. The text of the ordinance is not on the Comune’s site, so watch the signs.
How long is the Ghisallo climb?
From Bellagio 8.6 km with a 6.2% average according to the organiser of Il Lombardia; the Region gives about 8.5 km. There is no official measurement.
Before you go
To reach the lake with your bike there is the guide Getting here on Lake Como. For a walk there are the Sentiero del Viandante and the Greenway; in the Triangolo Lariano look at Canzo and the Segrino.
