Location
Caglio lies in the Triangolo Lariano, in the shadow of Monte Palanzone, within the Valassina area.
History
Of ancient origin, it followed the fortunes of the Pieve di Asso until 1407. From the 15th century it was a fief of the Dal Verme family (granted by the Visconti), then passed to other feudal lords up to the Sfrondati and the Austrian period; it regained autonomy in 1947. Between 1885 and 1886 the Divisionist painter Giovanni Segantini stayed here, painting some of his most celebrated works, including “Alla stanga”.
What to see
- Percorso Segantini: an open-air museum, the only one dedicated to the painter, with 16 of his most significant works reproduced in large format along the streets of the medieval village and in places linked to him.
- Sanctuary of the Madonna di Campoè: of medieval origin, with a 16th-century painting of the Madonna del Latte.
- Church of Santi Gervaso e Protaso, Church of San Giuseppe, Church of the Beata Vergine del Carmine.
What to do
From Caglio you can reach Monte Palanzone, Enco and the Colma di Sormano. Nearby: the Castagneto, the wildlife oasis, Parco Carlito, Parco Daini and Parco delle Rimembranze.
Getting there
Bus line C37 connects Asso station to Caglio in about 16 minutes; by car you climb along the SP41 of the Vallassina.
