Location
Dorio lies on the north-eastern branch of the lake, between Colico and Dervio.
History
Inhabited since protohistoric and Roman times, the main medieval settlement corresponded to the hamlet of Mandonico, set above the lake — still the original nucleus of the village today.
What to see
- The village: stone houses gathered around the church, between mountain and lake.
- Church of San Giorgio Martire (Mandonico): built in 1400, it preserves 1492 frescoes (recently restored) by Battista da Musso, depicting the patron saint, the Madonna and Child, Saint Michael and two bishops.
- Church of San Rocco: built in 1848 as a votive offering by residents who survived cholera; the oratory of the same name, from 1858, stands along the Sentiero del Viandante towards Colico.
- Church of Santa Maria Assunta and church of San Carlo Borromeo (the “fishermen’s church”).
What to do
The final stretch of the Sentiero del Viandante, the one climbing from Dervio towards Colico, passes through Dorio. A starting point for mountain trekking and cycling tourism around the lake.
Getting there
Dorio has its own station on the Trenord Lecco-Colico-Sondrio line, about 54 minutes from Lecco; by car, it is reached via the SS36.
