Church of the Santissima Annunziata

Alto Lario

Dosso del Liro →

Having become the parish church in the 17th century in place of the older San Pietro in Costa, the Church of the Santissima Annunziata is today the main place of worship in Dosso del Liro, whose patronal feast, shared with the church, falls on 25 March.

History

At the end of the 16th century, Bishop Ninguarda’s pastoral visit recorded Dosso del Liro as a parish of the pieve of Gravedona, with its original church dedicated to San Pietro. Already by 1651, however, the parish had passed to Santa Maria, a dedication also recorded in later 18th- and 19th-century visits, before taking its current name of Santissima Annunziata. The parish’s historical boundaries also included the church of San Pietro in Traversa and the oratory of Santa Maria del Rosario. By decree of 24 September 1957, Bishop Felice Bonomini also united “aeque principaliter” the parish of San Martino di Traversa with the Santissima Annunziata, reshaping the small mountain municipality’s ecclesiastical layout.

The present building, baroque in style with an entrance pronaos, was consecrated in 1699 and preserves stuccowork and frescoes from the same period.
