Lake Como With Children: What the Official Sources Say, Place by Place
Free-entry ages, fares for children, prams and family activities at the villas, museums, castles, cable systems and transport of Lake Como, from official sources.
With children on Lake Como the thing that changes most is age: you travel free up to 3 on trains and up to 4 on cable cars, you enter free up to 5 at Vezio and the Colico forts, up to 11 at the Villa Melzi gardens, up to 14 at Villa Monastero. This guide lists, place by place, the age bands, fares, rules on prams and family activities that the official sources publish. It makes no judgement on what is «suitable»: it reports what the operators say.
The sources are the sites of the places, the transport operators, the municipalities and the tourist bodies, read on 6 October 2026. Where a price has no year we say so, and where a figure is missing we do not replace it with a guess.
Lake Como with children: up to what age you enter free
The table gathers the places for which we found an official price list. «Free» is the age band of children who do not pay; «reduced» is the band and price for young people.

Villas and gardens
Villa Carlotta
The 2026 prices of Villa Carlotta are 17.50 euro for an adult, 7.00 for ages 6 to 18 and 12.00 for 19 to 25; up to 5 years old entry is free. The family ticket, for two adults and two young people aged 6 to 18, costs 35.00 euro. For children the site offers self-guided trails, both for ages 6-12: the guide «Villa Carlotta Explorers», free as a PDF or 2.00 euro on paper at the ticket office, and a quiz game to download. Family activities are booked by writing to the villa’s educational services.
Villa del Balbianello
The Balbianello has two tickets. For the park only, a self-guided visit with compulsory booking, the full price is 15 euro, young people aged 6 to 18 pay 11 and up to 5 years old entry is free. For villa and park, with a 50-minute guided visit for groups of at most 16 people, the full price is 25 euro and young people pay 17. The family ticket, for two adults and two or more young people aged 6 to 18, costs 42 euro for the park and 66 for villa and park. The FAI page gives no year for the prices.
To walk from Lenno there are a path of about one kilometre uphill, partly on gravel, and a 2.5-kilometre trail: in brackets the FAI writes that they are not suitable for prams or for people with walking difficulties. Prams are left at the ticket office, and the villa lends baby carriers.
Villa Monastero
At Villa Monastero children and young people up to 14 completed do not pay, in both the botanical garden and the house museum. The 2026 prices for adults are 15.00 euro with the house museum and 13.00 for the garden alone; young people from 15 to 25 pay 9.00 and 7.00. Individuals and families enter without booking. For schools the site lists a teaching module for up to 30 people at 100 euro (80 for groups from the province of Lecco), on top of the entrance ticket if due.
Villa Melzi and Villa Olmo
In the Villa Melzi gardens, in Bellagio, the single ticket costs 10 euro and children up to 11 do not pay and need not book; the school group pays 6.50 euro each. Guided visits are booked by email. The site gives no information on prams.
At Villa Olmo the Comune di Como page, updated on 18 March 2026, says the villa is closed for restoration and the park is open; it gives no fares for children. For Villa Vigoni the site describes the Italian-German centre and publishes neither a family visit offer nor fares for young people. Hours and prices of the villas for adults are in the guide to the villas to visit in 2026.
Museums, castles and places to visit
Como and Lecco
The Silk Museum in Como has a 10 euro ticket for adults and 5.00 for under-18s; with the family ticket a parent pays 7.00 euro and each child up to 18 pays 3.50, and under 3 entry is free. Schools, in groups of 10 to 25 people, pay 5.00 euro each with a guide in Italian. The museum’s calendar hosted, on 22 August 2026, the art workshop for children «Bandane Creative»; the event page was not available and we know no more.
In Lecco Palazzo Belgiojoso has free entry to the Archaeological, Historical and Natural History museums. In the «Estate a Lecco 2026» calendar the Museum System offered with Art-U the workshop «M come Museo» for ages 5-7 (7 June 2026) and a guided game visit to the Archaeological Museum for ages 8-12 (14 June 2026), with booking. They are initiatives already over, cited to say what was held in 2026: they do not announce 2027 dates.
Bellano, Varenna and Mandello
At the Orrido di Bellano the full price is 8.00 euro and the reduced one for ages 6 to 14 is 5.00; up to 5 years old entry is free. For the visit with several sites (Ca’ del Diavol, San Nicolao, Giancarlo Vitali Museum) the reduced ticket for ages 0 to 14 is always 5.00 euro and requires an accompanying adult. The route has stairs and narrow passages, and for this reason prams and wheelchairs are not admitted. The prices carry no year.
The Castello di Vezio, above Varenna, costs 7.00 euro; young people aged 6 to 17 pay 4.00 and up to 5 years old entry is free. The site gives opening every day from 1 March to 1 December and, for the rest of the year, at weekends and on holidays in good weather; a note says the falconry activity has been suspended since 2022. On prams the site says nothing.
The Moto Guzzi Museum in Mandello costs, according to the Comune, 12 euro full price and 10 for young people up to 18; for schools 4 euro.
Colico: the forts
The Forte Montecchio Nord has a full ticket at 10 euro, a reduced one at 6 for young people aged 6 to 17 and free entry up to 5; the fare gives no year. With the combined ticket for the two forts an adult pays 15 euro and a young person 8. At the Forte di Fuentes the museum’s site cannot be read, and the prices (8 euro full, 4 for young people aged 6 to 17, free up to 5) are those published by Visit Colico. Hours and opening days are in the guide to what is open from November to March.
Castel Baradello and the Grigne
At Castel Baradello, in Como, the 2026 openings run from March to October, on Sundays and holidays from 9.30am to 6pm, with guided tours every hour of about 40 minutes. The guided visit costs 10 euro for adults and 7 for children aged 6 to 14, and is free up to 5. Access is on foot only, about 20 minutes from piazza Camerlata along the dedicated path; the Spina Verde Park gives no information on prams.
The Museo delle Grigne in Esino Lario says it has educational paths and games for the youngest, and is accessible in every part, also for people with reduced mobility. The Museo del Ghisallo has on its site a «kids guide» for families, children and schools; the ticket system showed a maintenance message and we did not read the prices.
The Anna mine at Piani Resinelli
The Piani Resinelli Mining Park opens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The guided visit to the Anna mine lasts 90 minutes, has a minimum age of 3 and costs 7 euro from 3 to 12 and 10 over 12. Underground the temperature is 10-12 degrees, and the operator recommends comfortable shoes and suitable clothing and advises booking. The visit is not accessible to people with motor disabilities.
Funicular and cable cars
On the three lines small children do not pay and there is a reduced ticket for young people. On the Como-Brunate funicular, from 1 September 2026, children up to 4 travel free and young people up to 12 pay 2.50 euro for a single and 5.00 for a return (adults 3.70 and 7.40). On the Argegno-Pigra cable car the undated fare list, created in June 2025, gives the same reduced amounts for young people aged 4 to 12, free travel up to 4 and a family fare of 26.40 euro for a return for two adults and two children. On the Piani d’Erna cable car children under 4 travel free and an adult pays 8 euro a trip; the operator publishes no fare for young people, and the system is closed until 31 October.
The funicular’s fare list puts «carrozzine» (pushchairs, in English) in the parcels item up to 50 × 30 × 25 centimetres, 3.60 euro; at Pigra the same item is 3.30. The funicular is wheelchair accessible according to ATM, and for Pigra the Comune offers a free shuttle between the two stations. For the Piani d’Erna we found no rules on prams. Among the tickets valid on the three systems the ATM and ITB pages list «Io viaggio in famiglia». Hours and closures are in the guide to funiculars and cable cars.
Trains, boats and buses
Trenord trains carry children up to 3 free, as long as they do not take a seat; from 4 to 14 not yet completed the ticket costs 50% of the regional single fare. The page also says that in the STIBM area (Milan’s fare network) under-14s travel free, and that with the free «Io viaggio in famiglia» card young people up to 14 not yet completed travel free on public transport if accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket or pass: free travel, therefore, is not automatic on tickets towards the lake.
On the Navigazione Laghi boats children under 4 travel free if they do not take a seat and are accompanied by an adult with a ticket, one adult for every three children; young people aged 4 to 11 pay fare 1.50, from 1.80 to 7.30 euro a single depending on the band, and 3.50 for the day ticket. With the Happy Family scheme two adults with two full day tickets are entitled to up to two free places for young people aged 4 to 12 not yet completed, until 31 December 2026. The 2026 list says nothing on prams; the Mobility Charter, 2011 edition, makes them free, but we cannot say whether that applies today. Prices and calculations are in the guide to boat tickets.
On ASF Autolinee buses children up to 110 centimetres tall travel free if accompanied by an adult with a travel document, but they have no right to a seat and must be held on the lap. Prams and pushchairs are carried free if folded; if not folded, only on buses with a wheelchair space and in the reserved area, and they must be folded in case of crowding or when a person in a wheelchair gets on. The page does not mention child seats.
Beaches, parks and routes with a pushchair
For the beaches we found no official list with depth, type of bed, changing tables or rules for minors. The Visit Colico portal writes that a lifeguard service is guaranteed on the Piona and Seven beaches on Saturdays and Sundays from 4 July to 30 August, from 9.30am to 6.30pm; the page gives no year. The water-quality classification is in the guide to the beaches.
The Colico tourist portal describes, in an article published in 2021 and updated in April 2025 according to the page data, three routes to do with a pushchair. The first goes from piazza Garibaldi to the Bay of Piona along the lakefront and via dei Ciacc, an asphalt road with limited traffic of about 2 kilometres; the portal gives about 35 minutes. The second is the Sentiero Valtellina, which starts from the Ontano beach and follows the Adda river, flat according to the portal. The third is the lakefront from the Ontano to the Lido, under 2 kilometres. They are the portal’s descriptions, to be checked on site. The page on the town of Colico describes the village.
In Como the Comune reopened on 24 May 2026 the lakefront gardens in the area of the Tempio Voltiano telescope, with a festive afternoon for families. The playground is instead a project: on 3 July 2026 EspansioneTv wrote that the works on the lakefront gardens were behind schedule, that completion was not expected before autumn and that the playground, at 640,000 euro, would come on the timescale of a public tender.
What we did not find
- The Castel Baradello price list on the castle’s own site (the page does not load): we used the Spina Verde Park’s news item of 27 February 2026.
- The Forte di Fuentes site (it cannot be read): the prices are those of Visit Colico.
- The Museo del Ghisallo prices, because the online ticket office was under maintenance.
- A family offer and fares for young people at Villa Vigoni and Villa Olmo.
- Rules on prams for Villa Melzi, Castello di Vezio, Castel Baradello and the Piani d’Erna.
- Depth of the lake bed, changing tables and rules for minors on the beaches, and child seats on buses.
- The 2027 calendar of family initiatives: the events cited are all from 2026.
- A dated news item on new family offers in the last twelve months, apart from the reopening of Como’s lakefront gardens and the playground project.
How we checked
For each place we read the operator’s or body’s price page, and the price list when it is a PDF, on 6 October 2026. We do not use travel or parenting blogs, ticket resale sites or accommodation pages. The years of the price lists are in the text: where the page does not give one, we write «not stated» or «no year».
The search for sources was done with the help of artificial intelligence tools, and every price was re-read on the original page. The check changed three things. The draft gave for the Como-Brunate funicular the July 2025 fares (3.60 euro) and not those in force from 1 September 2026 (3.70). It attributed Colico’s lifeguard service to the Ontano and Piona beaches, while the page says Piona and Seven. And it gave Castel Baradello as unreadable: the Spina Verde Park’s news item of 27 February 2026 has prices, hours and how to get there. The prices for adults and young people at Villa Carlotta, Balbianello, Monastero, Melzi, the Silk Museum, the Orrido, Vezio and Montecchio matched the pages.

At the Orrido di Bellano no: stairs and narrow passages, and the site excludes prams and wheelchairs. At the Balbianello the FAI writes that the walk from Lenno is not suitable for prams, which are left at the ticket office.

The sources publish some: Villa Carlotta’s trails and quizzes for ages 6-12, the Museo del Ghisallo’s guide for families, the Museo delle Grigne’s paths and, in 2026, the workshops at Palazzo Belgiojoso in Lecco and the Silk Museum in Como. For next year’s dates you have to wait for the calendars.
Before you go
To reach the lake with children and prams the guide is getting to Lake Como. If it rains, the museums of the lake have indoor alternatives, and for the cities there are the pages on Como, Lecco and Bellano.
