Location
Tremezzina occupies the western side of the Como branch of the lake, roughly halfway along its length.
History
The municipality was created in 2014 from the merger of Lenno, Mezzegra, Ossuccio and Tremezzo (already united under the same name between 1928 and 1947). Lenno rises in the so-called “Gulf of Venus”; at Giulino di Mezzegra, Mussolini and Claretta Petacci were executed on 28 April 1945, and it was at Tremezzo that the Albergo Bazzoni hotel was bombed and destroyed in the days that followed. Ossuccio, meanwhile, holds a very ancient history, tied to the Isola Comacina facing it.
What to see
- Villa del Balbianello, 18th century, on the Lavedo peninsula: one of the most scenic gardens on the lake, donated to the FAI in 1988 by Guido Monzino (the first Italian to climb Everest) and a filming location for Star Wars and a 007 film. It can be reached by lake or on foot, on routes of 40 minutes or an hour and a half.
- Villa Carlotta, among the most visited villas on the Lario, with botanical gardens and art-filled interiors.
- The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio, with the Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso: the only UNESCO site in the province of Como.
- The Isola Comacina, reached by a short boat crossing.
- Villa Balbiano, in Ossuccio, and the Lido di Ossuccio, below the Antiquarium area.
- The Parco Teresio Olivelli, the former Meier garden of Tremezzo, and the Abbazia dell’Acquafredda in Lenno (12th century).
- Several historic churches: Santa Maria Maddalena and Sant’Eufemia in Ossuccio, the oratory of San Giacomo at Spurano (11th century), and the church of Santa Maria in Tremezzo with its Black Madonna.
What to do and excursions
From the alpe di Lenno you climb towards the peaks of Monte Galbiga, Monte di Tremezzo and Monte Crocione, among the Linea Cadorna trenches dug during the Great War. The Greenway del lago, the pedestrian route linking Colonno to Griante, crosses much of the municipal territory, touching some of its most striking points.
Getting there
The municipal territory is well served: bus line C10 Como-Menaggio-Colico stops at Lenno, Tremezzo and Ossuccio, while the Navigazione Lago di Como calls at Tremezzo, Lenno and Cadenabbia. By car, take the SS340 Regina.
